I've spent some time this Christmas looking at other photographers examples of work on the net. There is an enormous amount of outstanding images out there to inspire.
One blog in particular I was greatly impressed with which I first saw referenced in the forums of www.dpreview.com is that of Brooks Ayola at blog.ayola.com/index.html Take a look for some excellent examples of portraiture.
